As well as more straight forward outdoor pursuits, Castleton offers its visitors the chance to take part in some Hang-gliding and Paragliding excitement during their stay. Mam Tor at the western end of the Hope Valley is the major Castleton centre for hang gliding and paragliding.
The Castleton scheme is organised in conjunction with Derbyshire Flying Centre,and run by British Hang Gliding team member Steve Hudson,whooffers courses and individual instruction.Derbyshire Soaring Clubis one of the largest Hang-gliding and Paragliding clubs in theUKwith almost 500 members. The club does welcome Castleton visitors to have a go at flying, although they require you to become a member first.
Mam Torand nearby Rushup Edge have slopes which face north, south and east, making it viable to take off from there regardless of what direction the wind is blowing.On any given day you will probablysee numerous hang-gliders and Paragliders in the air from Castleton village.
